Testing methods for children's products

Material safety testing is a crucial aspect of testing for children's products. Testers analyze the raw materials used in the products to verify compliance with relevant safety standards. Common tests include screening for hazardous substances and heavy metals, as well as chemical composition analysis, to ensure the products are free from ingredients that could harm children's health. For instance, children's toys are tested for excessive levels of heavy metals like lead and mercury; children's tableware is checked for compliance with food-contact safety requirements; and children's textile products are tested for formaldehyde content, color fastness, and the presence of irritants. Material testing ensures the safety of children's products right from the source.

Structural and mechanical performance testing is another vital component of the evaluation process. Since children may pull, bump, or squeeze products during use, the product structure must possess sufficient stability and durability. Testing procedures typically include drop tests, tensile tests, pressure tests, small-parts tests, and inspections for sharp edges or points. For example, toys are checked to ensure parts do not detach easily, preventing accidental ingestion; children's furniture undergoes load-bearing and stability tests to prevent tipping; and connection points on products are inspected for structural integrity to ensure safety during long-term use.

Functional performance testing is also a key method for evaluating the quality of children's products. Depending on the intended use, products are tested to ensure they perform their designed functions correctly. For instance, children's cups are tested for sealing, leak-proof capabilities, and temperature resistance; children's seats are evaluated for adjustability, secure fastening, and load-bearing capacity; and toys are checked for the stable operation of features such as sound, lighting, and movement. For products with electronic components, additional tests cover battery safety, circuit protection, and operational stability to prevent issues like electrical leakage or overheating.
